• To further its Internet marketing campaign, Advan ced Plant Pharmaceuticals (APPI; New York) has signed an agreement with TechWave, parent company of ShopNow.com., to make available its line of all natural, standardized, pharmaceutical grade nutritional supplements via ShopNow.com. An advertising link on ShopNow.com will take visitors directly to APPI’s web site and a secure order form. Initially APPI will make available to all ShopNow.com shoppers its fully standardized, pharmaceutical grade, patented, cholesterol lowering agent, "Lo-Chol." APPI COO Barry Clare said the signing of the TechWave agreement gives APPI an Internet visibility that will create inroads for future more conventional sales of Advanced Plant Pharmaceutical products.
• Pangea Systems (Oakland, CA) has launched its EST Clustering and Alignment software tools, with eight sales to leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies booked within the first 90 days of the product’s availability. The tools convert high volumes of gene sequence fragments, called expressed sequence tags (ESTs), and partial gene sequences, into full length gene sequences suitable for use in DNA chip design and drug discovery. John Couch, CEO, said the company’s systems offer a way "to quickly identify and employ genes of interest out of the mountains of DNA sequence data now available in both proprietary and public databases [and] level the playing field for biotechnology companies that rely primarily on public data."
• Shared Medical Systems (SMS; Malvern, PA), a primary provider of information systems and services for the health industry, and Lawson Software (Minneapolis) have reported that 10 health organizations have signed new contracts for the Novius General Financial solution, featuring Lawson Insight Business Management System applications. Among them are Lenoir Memorial Hospital (Kinston, NC) and Reid Hospital and Health Care Services (Richmond, IN). In addition to selecting the Novius General Financial solution, Reid Hospital and Health Care Services has chosen the server management option through SMS’ Information Services Center, the largest healthcare data processing center worldwide. SMS and Lawson last September announ ced an exclusive agreement enabling both companies to sell, install and support the Lawson Insight line of financial, human resources, procurement and performance management applications in conjunction with SMS’ Novius family of client/server applications.
• Software Technologies (ST; Monrovia. CA), a provider of enterprise application integration (EAI) solutions, said that Fairview Health Services (Minneapolis) has gone live with Universal Index (UI), ST’s enterprise-wide master person index (EMPI) solution, to integrate its cross-facility information systems. Fairview used UI to connect its network of seven hospitals and 24 clinics to provide real-time mutual access to 2.5 million patient and member records for improved continuity of patient care.
