• ACS (Dallas) has expanded its five-year agreement with Dade Behring (Deerfield, IL), a provider of products and services for clinical laboratories, to provide midrange outsourcing services. The agreement calls for ACS to support Dade Behring’s mid-range processing, including the purchase, procurement, and management of its operating environments. The ACS system management services being provided include help desk, technical support, system operations, and disaster recovery.
• CliniComp International (San Diego) has formed an alliance with Clinitec International (Horsham, PA). Under the agreement, CliniComp will offer Clinitec’s NextGen electronic medical record as part of its enterprisewide clinical information system. The agreement will allow CliniComp to offer an ambulatory product while continuing to focus on its clinical information market, the company said.
• Genset (Paris) has signed an agreement with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (Balti more) to pursue the identification and cloning of schizophrenia susceptibility genes. Under the two-year agreement, the collaboration will combine Genset’s single nucleotide polymorphism technology and linkage disequilibrium association strategies for analysis of a bank of 1,800 DNA samples collected from more than 300 families containing one or more member diagnosed with schizophrenia.
• Jones International, which is owned by Jones Education (Englewood, CO), will produce a series of television and Internet-based educational programs of monthly sessions of the Congressional Biomedical Research Caucus. The caucus holds luncheons featuring top scientists presenting the latest research advances in the treatment and prevention of heart disease, AIDS, cancer and other conditions. Jones International Knowledge TV, in conjunction with the Washington bureau of Tribune Broadcasting, will tape presentations and present them on Knowledge TV’s daily Rx TV news program.
• Lexical Technology (Alameda, CA) and Ontyx (Ridgefield, CT) have signed a letter of intent to merge. The merger of the two clinical vocabulary market companies is expected to accelerate the healthcare industry’s adoption of structured terminology. The companies have several common customers, including Kaiser Permanente, the College of American Pathologists, the National Cancer Institute, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Lexical is involved in the development of vocabulary services and components that use existing terminologies, and Ontyx, which was founded in 1996, concentrates on software for authoring, maintaining, and delivering healthcare terminology solutions. The merger is expected to be completed by July 1.
• The National Kidney Foundation (New York) and ThriveOnline have formed an educational partnership to provide online information about incontinence and other issues related to the kidneys and urinary disease. The site will offer information on causes, treatment options, and available resources. The site is at www.thriveonline.com/health/ incont/index.html.
• Ross Systems (Atlanta), a supplier of enterprise systems, has signed a new agreement with One Call Medical (Parsippany, NJ) for Ross’ Renaissance CS Financial Systems. One Call provides CAT scan and MRI services to managed care companies. The system will be implemented on Microsoft’s Windows NT program using the Oracle database.
• SMG Marketing Group (Chicago), a healthcare marketing and consulting firm, has signed a one-year contract with Kimberly-Clark Professional Health Care (Roswell, GA). Under the contract, SMG will provide the following database products: Integrated Healthcare Networks, Hospital Market, Freestanding Outpatient Surgery Centers, and SMG GroupTrack with SMG VantagePoint II. Several custom projects also are involved.
• Superior Consultant Holdings (Southfield, MI) and Microsoft (Redmond, WA) have formed an alliance to deliver end-to-end enterprise solutions for the healthcare industry. The two companies will collaborate with clients and vendors to deliver integrated solutions. They will train and certify more than 500 consultants and open four client Solution Centers.
• Systems Consulting (Portland, ME) has signed an agreement with Innovative Health Strategies (Milwaukee) for development of a next-generation prescription-level data validation tool for better managed care rebate processing. The new product is called CARS/Validata and will be used in conjunction with Systems Consulting’s CARS contract management solution in the life sciences marketplace..
• Telemedic Systems (Redmond, WA) and Critkon (Tampa) have entered into a licensing agreement that will allow Telemedic to integrate Critikon’s Dinamap NIBP technology for Telemedic’s remote vital signs monitoring unit called VitalLink. VitalLink is designed for remote military and commercial emergency telemedicine, and was carried on both of the Virgin Challenger Around the World Balloon attempts.
• Today HealthCentral.com (Berkeley, CA) and BestDoctors (Aiken, SC) has signed an agreement to add the BestDoctor physician referral online network to HealthCentral’s group of health information experts. HealthCentral users will be able to access the BestDoctor network and participate in interactive events with medical experts. HealthCentral also will feature BestDoctor physicians in online discussions and multimedia webcasts.
• Versal Technologies (Boston) and PharmaPros (Lawrenceville, NJ) have formed a partnership to create a unified suite of consulting services for the healthcare industry. Versal is an information technology outsourcing and product development company that focuses on the biotechnology, medical device, and pharmaceutical industries. PharmaPros provides clinical and regulatory consulting services to the biotechnology, contract research, and pharmaceutical industries.
