ECRI reviews iontophoresis as drug delivery method
Iontophoresis, the use of an electric current to deliver a drug across the skin or another body surface, has long been used in the health care field. In a new report, Iontophoresis for Drug Delivery, ECRI presents the results of a thorough examination of available medical literature on the treatment.
The report focuses on the results of iontophoresis in numerous clinical applications, including administration of local anesthesia, pain relief, physical therapy application, treatment of hyperhidrosis, sweat testing for cystic fibrosis, dental applications, and others. Also addressed is the state of medical research on iontophoresis, including its potential application in long-term drug delivery for the management of chronic illnesses, such as insulin therapy for patients living with diabetes.
