HHS awards $1.46 million in fraud and abuse grants
The Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a series of grants to states, the IRS, and the Defense Department to underwrite health care fraud and abuse prevention projects.
The grants awarded include the following:
• $300,000 shared grant to the California and New York Offices of Attorneys General to develop an automated system for managing health care investigations and prosecutions.
• $232,700 to Alabama’s Office of Attorney General to train investigators in computer search and seizures, buy new equipment, and conduct an outside review of fraud and abuse controls in the state’s Medicaid hospital reimbursement system.
• $213,334 to Colorado’s Department of Health Care Policy to uncover loopholes fostering fraud when health care programs overlap; also to develop methods to validate payment-related provider diagnoses.
• $100,000 to the Nebraska Department of Insurance to purchase a computerized relational database.
• $112,315 to the Pennsylvania Department of Public Works to buy new software for shortening the time needed to conduct a fraud investigation.
• $121,700 to the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance for training to detect fraud in such areas as worker compensation claims and commercial health insurance.
• $83,776 to Washington, DC, for software to reduce fraudulent billing of health-related transportation services.
• $107,000 for the IRS to bolster investigations, training, and seminars on managed care fraud.
• $195,612 to the Department of Defense’s Inspector General for computer equipment to analyze data from the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniform Services for fraud and abuse.
