NIH announces set of stroke symptoms
Members of the Brain Attack Coalition with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, selected a set of stroke symptoms they have asked health care professionals to use when speaking to the public and the media, and to incorporate into written materials.
Brain Attack Coalition Stroke Symptoms:
• sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body;
• sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or understanding speech;
• sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes;
• sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or coordination;
• sudden severe headache with no known cause.
Medical help should be summoned immediately at the first sign of these symptoms.
For community outreach, take the bus!
For the last two years, Hartford (CT) Hospital has taken patient education to the community in a 40-foot transit bus converted into a classroom. The purpose is to address public health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease.
Staff on the bus conduct blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and HIV screenings. Counseling is always paired with the screenings so participants can learn about prevention of chronic health problems.
In addition to addressing risk factors for chronic disease, health educators on the bus teach about food and home safety, fitness, nutrition, and poison control. A computer on the bus is equipped with a health information database and a printer. If a person wants information on asthma triggers, staff can retrieve the information from the data base and print it out.
