1998 Baldrige health care criteria unveiled
The National Institute of Standards and Technology recently published the latest criteria for performance excellence in the health care industry. While the Baldrige Awards categories don't presently include health institutions, the booklet of criteria offers a comprehensive self-assessment tool. It's used by a growing number of health care groups. Individual copies of the booklet, 1998 Health Care Criteria for Performance Excellence is available free of charge.
The seven areas for assessment include leadership, strategic planning, patient and customer focus, information and analysis, staff focus, process management, and organizational performance results.
The booklet notes that many state and local award programs have health care categories to which you can submit your Baldrige-model assessment for external judging. State programs also provide rich opportunities for benchmarking your performance within health care as well as other industries. Local Baldrige Award Examiners are trained and eager to share information.
