VA issues Millennium Bug planning guide for patients
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA; Washington) is taking the Millennium Bug seriously as more than just a hospital virus. It has just released a patient-oriented guidebook to assist VA and other healthcare facilities in preparing for the Year 2000 date change. The guide offers a nine-step approach to constructing a Year 2000 contingency plan, with sample contingency plans for each department in a typical healthcare facility as well as an overall plan for an entire facility. And it offers suggestions to limit any adverse impacts of Y2K.
VA’s Patient-Focused Year 2000 Contingency Planning Guidebook was praised by Nancy Darr, vice president of planning and program development for Premier (Chicago), a provider of mass purchasing services to 1,700 member hospitals. She said her company has posted a hyperlink on its web site connecting it to what she termed "VA’s comprehensive work."
The guidebook includes outlines for assessing renovating, validating and preparing contingency plans for medical devices, an assessment of potential external threats — such as utility, trash, and transportation systems failures or outages and plans for preparedness training and drills. It also offers recommendations for exercising and testing critical utility systems such as emergency power and water. The guide is available on the department’s web site, www.va.gov/year2000.
Another Y2K site launched
A team of attorneys who focus on entrepreneurial legal issues has launched Y2K.com in cooperation with CNET, said Greg Cirillo, co-founder and owner of the URL www.y2k.com since 1996. Cirillo and his fellow co-founder, Daniel Hassett, are partners with Williams, Mullen, Christian & Dobbins who credit the website for growing their Y2K-focused practice. They said they chose CNET because of its network which offers research on technology issues, used in their legal practice. The new site features CNET’s Y2K resources, plus a legal area that will continue to track and provide guidance on Y2K issues and the law.
The site includes features on Y2K issues, a government compliance report card analysis, key Y2K downloads, prices on Y2K utilities, side-by-side comparisons and reviews of Y2K software and gadgets, the latest news from News.com, CNET Central TV coverage, message boards and resource web. It is updated daily.
CNET produces a branded Internet network and television programming for both targeted and general audiences, and it owns 40% of Snap, a search and navigation service for Internet users, co-owned by NBC.
