• The California Medical Association (San Francisco) and Physicians Online (POL; Tarrytown, NY) will be offering all association members free Internet services, including e-mail and access of POL’s web-based resources. POL claims a physician enrollment of more than 200,000, and has redesigned its home page to help physicians navigate more easily.
• Creative Socio-Medics (CSM), a subsidiary of Net smart Technologies (Islip, NY), reported working with Sun Microsystems on CSM’s Total Solution Healthcare MIS strategy for behavioral health, mental retardation, and substance abuse providers throughout the U.S. The Behavioral Health Information System (BHIS), the Human Services Information System (HSIS), and the Clinician WorkStation (CWS) operate on the Sun Micro systems platform to offer complementary solutions to Sun’s clinical systems in related horizontal disciplines (such as high availability, data warehousing, and network connectivity). Sun’s server scalability and reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) provide a stable environment for healthcare organizations and yield sound investment protection and increased longevity for customers.
• Internet Security Advantages (ISA; Waltham, MA), an information systems security services firm, and the Connecticut Hospital Association’s CHIME affiliate have formed a partnership to provide secure communications among health care providers and payers within Connecticut. The announcement by CHIME of its CHIME-Trust Healthcare PKI Initiative is the first effort, statewide, to address HIPAA health security requirements utilizing the Internet. The initiative has three goals: To protect the privacy of patient records; to establish an audit trail for legal recourse.; and to comply with security standards mandated by organizations such as HIPAA. PKI at CHIME is designed to provide six critical components of secure communications: confidentiality; authentication via identity checks; authorization via access control; data Integrity; accountability via non-repudiation and 24 x 7 availability.
• US Interactive (Philadelphia) an international Internet professional services company, recently worked with ECRI, a non-profit international health services research agency and a collaborating center of the World Health Organization, to design and implement an Internet site for the National Guideline Clearinghouse www.guideline.gov for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ECRI created an Internet-based delivery system for the National Guideline Clearinghouse. ECRI (Plymouth Meeting, PA), a health services research agency, was awarded the contract to develop the National Guideline Clearinghouse, including the relational database of structured abstracts and comparisons of clinical guidelines. "Our unique challenge in this project was to create an interface design acceptable to a broad range of constituents, as well as accessibility for the disabled and the development of a sophisticated searching and browsing mechanism," said Eric Pulier, US Interactive’s chairman and co-founder. The Internet project provides an Internet-based information source on clinical care that will help health professionals improve the quality of care they provide to their patients. When the site was launched, Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala said, "The National Guideline Clearinghouse is an important example of the Clinton Administration’s commitment to improving the quality of healthcare in this country. This new online service gives clinicians free and easy access to the latest healthcare information from many sources as they make treatment decisions with their patients." US Interactive designs Electronic Enterprise solutions which link an organization’s strategic business objectives with advanced Internet technologies.
