This computerized resource assists health care professionals in providing patients with easy-to-understand information designed to address all aspects of their care and health. Presented in both English and Spanish, materials cover information on patient condition, including treatment, follow-up care, psychosocial issues, and continuing health concerns. Overviews for frequently prescribed drugs are also provided. Pricing is based on facility size and ranges from $1,300 to $9,500 for an annual subscription including four quarterly updates. Eau Claire, WI-based Logicare offers two products for improving the delivery of patient education. Checkout is an automated emergency department discharge package. Prices start at $5,450 for a one-station system. Clinical Teacher's P.E.T. is an automated patient education software for inpatient and outpatient use. Prices start at $24,000 for a four-station system. The software is available for use with Windows95 and Windows NT, an operating system frequently used in computer networks.

The CD has 200 individual pages for conditions that require extensive education, and each can be personalized for individual patient's needs. E-Sheets provide illustrated information and instructions for the following departments: cardiology, maternal/child health, orthopedics, post-op instructions, diabetes, oncology, and pulmonology. The cost is $2,450 for one stand-alone version. Prices for an Intranet version for hospitals begin at $5,000 for a facility with an average daily patient census of 150 and increase in price according to census. Intranet version for clinics start at $795 for those with an average daily patient census of 10. E-Sheets print in color or black and white.

PatientEd is a patient education manage- ment system produced by Townsend, WA-based Medifor. This clinical software tool, designed to help providers educate patients consistently and efficiently, runs on Windows. Using the PatientEd system practice guidelines, a physician, nurse, or other provider can create detailed, custom instruction documents for patients. These documents explain the patient's illness and reiterate the medications, home care, treatments, precautions, and follow-up that were prescribed during the patient's visit. A PatientEd stand-alone system with one provider license costs $395, and a network system begins at $595 with one provider license.
